control and gay rights in that piece. charlie pierce writes obama's speech is a bold resentation of almost everything the democratic party has stood for the last 20 years. >> yeah, i got choked up at a number of different times. the whole inauguration was so boldly inclusive. you have an openly gay latino poet delivering the poem. >> stephanie: and sean hannity said it was the most divisive speech ever. >> and the benediction, the pastor, the gay media uncovered some of his not so nice things he had to say about lbgt people in the past and 24 hours later they had a new priest to give the benediction. >> stephanie: right. and this young gay hispanic

poet, again, historic and i don't know if you saw it jim, but the best picture ever for eric cantor's bitch face. >> stephanie: i think charlie wrote about this too, you can't go back from that now. >> yes. in conversations yesterday all over town and all weekend, you just see the effect of obama's inclusiveness, obama's equating lbgt rights with civil rights just generally human rights and i think you see coalitions building that you didn't see in the past. people who didn't necessarily see lbgt rights as being on par with other rights. >> right. he has changed the conversation that fair is fair. >> fair is fair -- >> stephanie: no you wrote this. you had a great piece in the "the advocate" about this. the american people -- even if some people have a little -- i don't know if i really like

>> he is such a sore winner. it's so arrogant. >> stephanie: i don't even know what that means. he talked about the things he ran and won on? >> he wasn't apologetic enough for doing all of those things. he should apologize to me personally. for not doing what i want. >> stephanie: what remains to be done when people say is he going to walk the walk talk the talk what remains to be done for him -- the supreme court is not obviously under his -- he can't affect marriage equality anymore. he has already gone on record right? what would you like to see him do? >> one of the things we talked about is his campaigning in a sense, and even in front of the supreme court yesterday. another thing that would be fascinating is lbgt cabinet appointments and there are two

great possibilities. john berry from the office of personnel, and fred hochberg who is chair of the u.s. export import banks. >> stephanie: yeah, and i was reading the story yesterday in the "washington post" about military -- same-sex couples still not having the same rights as -- you know to services and benefits and all of that. >> we have been seeing lately, same-sex spouses being kicked out -- or not admitted to officers clubs. chaplain still can deny same-sex couples the right to marry even in states where it is legal on bases. >> stephanie: right. we will talk as we go forward as the president would say. right back. matthew breen from "the advocate." right back on the "stephanie miller show" live from dc. ♪

amazing time to be us at this civil rightest battle in our history. >> it is an extraordinary time. and i have to tell you something, for me -- jesse jackson watching the president talking about this. remember jesse jackson ran for president, and first started talking about some of these things. i was the human rights organizer for the beginning of the fund. and this was in the early '80s. the very first major dinner that hand for gay political rights was in 1981. i was the dinner organizer, and the big name that we got was walter mondale. at this point he was the highest elected official to ever show up at a gay event, and it was a big deal. it made time magazine that a

former elected if i recall would attend an event like that. the next year was jesse jackson and that was the first time jesse jackson went to the event and he didn't get it. he kept talking about i believe y'all have the right to sex with whoever you want. and [ inaudible ] said reverend, it's about love not sex. >> stephanie: i know. but for the president to use the word love that was the other like -- goose bump moment for me. >> that's exactly it. and that's my point. that's how far we have come in literally 30 years in our politics. you talk about the perry case -- i mean we had a supreme court decision in 1986 that upheld the anti-gay laws in
